My first impression on the chapter is that I feel happy that Jean Valjean was accepted by the bishop to stay for the night. The bishop knew how he felt getting kicked out from other places and not able to rest or eat. Madame Maglore didn't trust him still even though they let him come in. She believed that Jean would steal the valuables that they have so she hid them. The Bishop seems to trust him and hopes that Jean Valjean can change on the hatred that he has on the people that treated him bad for what he was.
Good questions! His family was part of the aristocracy and they were attacked by the revolutionaries. That's why he went to Italy. The author doesn't explain what happened next, only that when M. Myriel came back to France, he was a priest.
